Despite progress in the education system, many students still face a silent and persistent obstacle: difficulties in learning to read. This problem, which often begins in the first years of school, conditions the child’s entire educational path.
The challenge of reading in the early years
National studies indicate significant rates of school failure, with a direct impact on the subjects of Portuguese and mathematics. Even more worrying is the link between initial difficulties in reading and the spread of problems to other areas of knowledge.
For many children, especially those with less family support or from diverse linguistic backgrounds, reading becomes a barrier – not only to knowledge, but also to self-esteem, motivation and mental health.
An inequality that repeats itself
Even when there are overall improvements in the system, there is still a fringe of students who don’t keep up. There are many causes, but the consequences are clear: demotivation, retention and, sometimes, early school quitting.
If we identify those at risk early on, can we change the course of these trajectories?
